Debunking NowThis Politics' State of the Union Video

I recently happened upon a NowThis Politics video on Facebook, claiming that "Trump averaged one false claim every 4.5 minutes of his first State of the Union".  I usually don’t respond to anything NowThis posts because they are so obscene with their falsehoods and half-truths that anyone who takes them seriously deserves to be lied to.

But I had 10 minutes to spare, so I decided to write a rebuttal.

WATCH:

That’s right.  It only took 10 minutes for me to find the facts about everything they said.

It doesn’t take that long to fact-check!  Why does nobody ever do it?  I debunked this video in 10 minutes!

So let’s analyze the video…

Trump: "After years and years of wage stagnation, we are finally seeing rising wages."
NowThis: False.  Wages have fallen.

Actually, they haven't.  Wage increased were reported by the highest number of companies in 18 years.

Trump: "We have ended the war on American energy."
NowThis: False.  There wasn't one.

Well, that's a matter of opinion.  So you can't really make a true/false statement about that.  But there are a lot of people who believe that there was one.  In fact, enough Republicans thought there was one that they proposed a bill to end the war in 2012.

Trump: "And we have ended the war on beautiful clean coal."
NowThis: False.  'Clean coal' does not exist.

Actually, it does.  It's called 'coke coal'.  It has very few impurities and the chemical changes caused by burning produce an almost perfect equation, creating only ash and CO2 (which isn't considered a pollutant.  Humans breathe it out.)

Wow...liberals making statements about coal, when they know absolutely nothing about the substance.  Surprised?  Clean coal does exist.  Who are the science deniers now?

Trump: We are now proudly an exporter of energy to the world.
NowThis: False. This was also true under Obama.

Ok.  I'll give you this one.  The use of the word "now" implies that it wasn't happening before.  But we have increased our energy exports.

Trump: "Since the election, we have created 2.4 million new jobs."
NowThis: Oops.  This is the slowest gain in jobs since 2010.

So you're admitting that this statement is actually true?  You make a video of "falsehoods", and then you attack something that's true?  That's stupid.  If you want to say "that's not all that impressive because it's a slower rate of job gain", then fine.  But you can't say it's not true, because it is.

Trump: "We enacted the biggest tax cuts and reforms in American history."
NowThis: False.  They weren't.

Again, this is an opinion statement.  You can't make a true/false assessment of it.  It depends on one's definition of the word "biggest" in this sense.  The most number of changes?  Or the most far-reaching?  Or the reforms with the most implications and impact?  Do you count the number of lines or pages in the legislation?  If the impact is your measure, it definitely is the "biggest".

Trump: "Our massive tax cuts provide tremendous relief for the middle class and small businesses."
NowThis:  Not really. 75+% of the cuts went to the wealthy.

Seriously?  The fact that the majority of the "relief" went to the wealthly doesn't mean that relief wasn't given to the middle class.  That's like getting 5 free donuts and whining because someone else got 10.  Even if they got 100 free donuts, you got 5!  What are you complaining about!

Trump is literally handing you money and you're complaining about it!  What ungrateful snots.

Trump: "The visa lottery randomly hands out green cards to without any regard for skill, merit, or the safety of American people."
NowThis: False.  The immigrants must be vetted and pass education/work criteria.

I'll meet you halfway on this one.  If they are vetted, then there is regard to safety.  But just because they must meet education/work criteria doesn't mean that there is regard for skill or merit.  There are others with more skill and merit who are more deserving of the honor of immigrating to America.  If this was not the case there wouldn't need to be a lottery.

Trump: "In the past, we have foolishly released hundreds and hundreds of dangerous terrorists, only to meet them again on the battlefield—including the ISIS leader, al-Bagdadi."
NowThis: False.  The U.S. didn't release al-Bagdadi.

Yes, they did.  They released him to Iraqi Forces from Camp Bucca in 2009.  Now, you can argue and say that technically the Iraqis then set him free, but this misses the entire point of what he is saying.  The point is: we let him out of Camp Bucca and we have met him on the battlefield, and Trump wants to stop this from happening in the future.

Trump: "Let's invest in workforce development and let's invest in job training."
NowThis: Nope.  Trump's budget proposed a $168 million cut.

I'll give you this one.  The budget appears to cut a lot of job training programs, which is admittedly contrary to his statement.  However, the amount reported varies, depending on the source reporting it.

Where did NowThis get the number $168 million?  Well, that's the amount of increased funding the Trump budget would give to charter schools.

Who is really lying to you America?  Trump, or NowThis?
